Paul S. Chulik Sr.

Longtime Sitka resident Paul S. Chulik Sr. died Nov. 2, 2010 at SEARHC-Mount Edgecumbe Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was 86.

The funeral was held on Nov. 5, at Sitka Assembly of God followed by a military graveside service. A reception took place in the fireside hall at Sitka Assembly of God.

Paul was born to Spiridon Paul Chulik and Amelia Grace (Scott) Chulik on July 11, 1924, in Juneau. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve his country and to support his mother and two siblings. He served from 1942-1946.

Paul served as mayor of Angoon then was an I.R.A. Council member for two years. He also worked in both the Hood Bay Cannery and for the New England Fish Company in Chatham.

On Oct. 22, 1949, Paul married the love of his life, Isabel James. They made their home in Angoon for a short time before moving to Sitka in 1966. The couple just celebrated their 61st anniversary Oct. 22.

Paul worked at Mount Edgecumbe High School and at Mount Edgecumbe Hospital.

Paul loved hunting, fishing and subsistence gathering. He enjoyed sharing his memories of teaching his nephews to hunt, fish and to live off of the land.

Paul was an active member in the Sitka Assembly of God Church, where he was involved with the "Worship Team," was an usher, a Sunday School teacher and a full-fledged board member. He loved singing for the Sunday worship.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Tommy Chulik; sister Helene (Chulik) James; three sons, Leonard Chulik, Mitchell Chulik and Timothy Chulik; and daughter Carol Chulik.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Isabel; daughters Lorraine (Chuck) Powell of Carpenteria, Calif., Colleen Jackson (Ken), Veronica Chulik (Tikon); and a son Pastor Paul S. Chulik Jr. of Sitka.

Pallbearers were Matfie McCarr Jr., Henry Larsen, Peter McCluskey Jr., John McCluskey, Al Jack, Chuck Miller, Paul Thomas, Andy Lee, Mike Reyes and Jake Carroll.

Honorary pallbearers were Paul's close friends, Harlan Adams, Gene Bartaloba, John Littlefield, Herman Davis, Bill Shayen, Al Wilson, Rudy Walker, Jim Skannes and Al Duncan.
