NEW CALENDAR ITEMS

• Cowboy action shoot - A cowboy action shoot will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range. Registration is at 9 a.m. New shooters are welcome; cowboy attire is requested. Info: Evengood Guysmiss (John Barnett), 364-2514.

• Women's Classic Basketball League skills clinic - Juneau Parks and Recreation will hold a skills clinic for Women's Classic Basketball League players on Monday, Nov. 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Gastineau Elementary School gymnasium. Info: Juneau Parks and Rec, 586-5226.

Friday, Nov. 14

• Roughhouse Friday boxing - Event starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Marlintini's Lounge, with a ring girl contest at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Boxers and ring girls are needed. Boxers should call 635-9162 and ring girls call 723-7134 to register. Ticket info: Marlintini's Lounge, 789-0799.

Friday-Sunday, Nov. 14-16

• Valley Dart League - Inaugural Southeast Shootout: Tournament takes place at Squire's Rest in Auke Bay and features a $1,000-plus total payout. The tournament opens with blind draw doubles at 7 p.m. on Friday ($20 per team entry fee). On Saturday morning, there will be women's doubles 501 SO/DO at 9:30 a.m. and men's doubles 501 SO/DO at 10 a.m. (both events are $20 per team). On Saturday afternoon, there is women's singles cricket at 1:30 p.m. and men's singles cricket at 2 p.m. (both events are $12 per person). On Saturday night is mixed doubles, using Windy City format, at 7 p.m. ($20 per team). On Sunday morning, there will be women's singles 501 SO/DO at 9:30 a.m. and men's singles 501 SO/DO at 10 a.m. (both events are $12 per person). This event is sanctioned by the American Darts Organization and about 100 players are expected from as far away as Anchorage and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Tournament business sponsors are needed. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth indoor soccer registration - Sign-up began on Saturday, Nov. 8, and continues at the Parks and Rec main office at City Hall or the Zach Gordon Youth Center from Monday, Nov. 10, through Monday, Nov. 24. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Forms are available online at http://www.juneau.org/parkrec/youth/youthsports.php, or they can be picked up at the Parks and Rec office or Zach Gordon. Volunteer coaches and paid referees are needed. • Juneau Youth Activity Board meeting - The Juneau Parks and Recreation Youth Activity Board will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, in City Hall Conference Room No. 224. The board will review a Juneau Youth Football League contingency grant request, and begin to assemble the fiscal year 2005 Youth Activity Grant "Request for Proposal" document. • Raincountry Flyfishers monthly meeting - The Raincountry Flyfishers will hold a regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Mendenhall River School Library. Jon Lyman will give a presentation on the Federation of Fly Fishers and its Alaska Council. He will also discuss the art of bamboo rod construction. New members and visitors are always welcome. OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Meet from 7-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Cost is $4 and open gym is limited to adults (age 18-older) only. Info: Community Schools, 463-1700, Ext. 325.

• Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. • Open badminton gyms - Meet from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays at the Auke Bay Elementary School gym, or from 7- 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gastineau Elementary School gym in Douglas. Auke Bay gyms open to adults and teens; Gastineau gyms open to all ages. $3 fee per session. All abilities welcomed, bring a racquet if you own one. • Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
