Bookmark contest winners to be honored

The Juneau Public Libraries will mark National Children's Book Week (Nov. 14-20) with a bookmark contest awards ceremony at 6 p.m. Nov. 13, at the downtown library. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries.

Honored children will receive laminated copies of their bookmarks and gift certificates from the Friends of Juneau Public Libraries Amazing Bookstore and Hearthside Books. The winners' designs will be printed and given out at the library all year.

A panel of five judges reviewed 969 entries and chose one winner and two honorable mentions for each grade level, preschool through high school.

Winners are: Jane Hartle, Kelly Fernandez, Helena Benedict, Junnie Chup, Alex McCord, Sabrina Caldwell, Jericho Cristobal, Phillip White, Calder Otsea, Amberli Fitka, Adam Zamudio, Veronica Buness, Cedar Schick, Jacob Ross, Matthew Seymour, Ashleigh Watt, Jolene Chup, Natalia Spengler, Tristan Cartwright, Elias Antaya, Briana Tagaban, Nate Watt, Laura Barnhill, Avery Rowcroft, Morgan Cartwright, Wesley Bowhay, Owen Mendoza and Grace Newman.

JDHS dance team to hold garage sale

The Juneau-Douglas High School dance team will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon, Nov. 12, in the commons at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School.

Pom-poms, military costumes, cowboy costumes, new dance shoes, tights and blue velvet tank tops will be available. This is an opportunity to purchase dance gear at inexpensive prices.

Vocational institute offers free orientation

Starting in November, the Alaska Vocational Institute is offering free orientation sessions every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon for the spring AVI class.

The orientation session will give more information on funding and employment opportunities and on the 20-week computer and office skills training course that begins Feb. 7.

Class space is limited. Call 586-5718 to register.

Humane society to host open house

The Gastineau Humane Society hosts an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 12 in honor of Support Your Local Animal Shelter Week.

Pet lovers may also want to donate needed supplies, volunteer at the shelter or adopt a pet.
