Mahatma Gandhi said that the things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice.
Mr. Ruedrich's resignation from the Oil and Gas Commission is appropriate. Subsequently, the Republican Party can't afford leadership that produces such embarrassing situations. We've got way too much at stake and way too much to accomplish to allow the ethical lapses of some to negate the good labors of many.
The Republican Party is only made stronger when public discourse and open and honest debates are supported. The USA was founded protecting freedoms of expression. These include Republicans questioning other Republicans for unprincipled behaviors and for maintaining intolerable positions on issues such as threats to the initiative gathering process, relaxations of lobbying laws, cuts to the Longevity Bonus program, and the ubiquitous and undeviating feelings of resentment surrounding Governor Murkowski's appointing his daughter to his open Senate seat, among other things.
Challenging the established authorities on these and other issues shouldn't be viewed as anti-Republican, but rather should be embraced as evidencing the health, vitality and democratic character of the Alaska Republican Party.
