Perseverance pub trivia night combines libations, Shakespeare

Posted: Thursday, November 12, 2009

What do Shakespeare, prizes, libations and Perseverance Theatre all have in common? The answer is the Pub Trivia Fundraiser being sponsored by the local theater company at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Rendezvous Bar.

"The first one was not quite a year ago, but I guess you could call it the second annual," Perseverance Theatre development director Ruth Kostik said.

The trivia fundraiser will be based around the theater's latest production, "Leading Ladies," written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Brandon Demery. The show opened Nov. 6 and closes Dec. 6.

"It's kind of like a Shakespearean 'Some Like it Hot,'" Kostik said. "That's how we''ve been billing it."

There is no cover charge to the trivia challenge, although there is a $10 entrance fee for each team that enters. The proceeds will go to helping the company provide quality local theater for Juneau, Kostik said.

Deb Barry, one of the proprietors of the Rendezvous, will also be concocting a special libation named "The Leading Lady." The blend of the cocktail is still a mystery, Kostik said.

"We've kind of left that up to her," she said. "It's going to be something red."

Part of the bar proceeds will also be donated to Perseverance Theater.

"We are encouraging people to drink a lot," Kostik said with a laugh.

The categories for the trivia contest will also be inspired by the latest production. It will be a good warm up for those that have yet to see the play or a pleasant refresher for those that already have, Kostik said.

"We're not officially saying what the categories are yet," she said. "A lot of it has to do with ideas from the show, like Shakespeare and 'Some Like it Hot' and stuff."

There will also be prizes given away, Kostik said.

"The prizes are going to be Perseverance schwag and tickets to the show."
