Chemical in well water prompts testing

FAIRBANKS - A refinery plans to test private water wells in North Pole to see if a chemical traveled via groundwater beyond its property line.

Flint Hills Resources reported finding traces of sulfolane in a city-owned well off the refinery's property.

Ann Farris of the state Department of Environmental Conservation says the testing will focus on land within three-quarters of a mile from the refinery, but could expand if necessary.

The company expects to approach landowners about the testing in the coming weeks.
