The Juneau Gun Club, a private trap shooting club located on Montana Creek Road, has sponsored a winter trap league for more than 10 years. Much like many of Juneau's winter sports - basketball, bowling, volleyball, to name a few - JGC's winter trap promotes the sport, a togetherness of men, women and youth. But the main difference is that it is outdoors, under lights and held in nearly every type of weather (except when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, then participants have a "weather bye").
This year's league will start on Thursday, Dec. 9 with league shooting every Thursday night from 6 to 9 p.m. A team captains' meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Juneau Gun Club. The league will last 12 weeks.
Teams are composed of seven to 10 members. The teams may be mixed, consisting of men, women and youth, they may be all men, all women and/or all youth and may represent shooters of all skill levels.
Interested individuals not already on a team can call the club house and have their name placed on a shooters list, ask questions or they may come to the club house facility on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. or on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There is a league entrance fee and a trap charge each league shooting night a team shoots. Some teams are sponsored by local business while other teams simply divide the league entrance fee of $150 amongst the team members.
