In the Nov. 11 Juneau Empire, the U.S. Forest Service is quoted as saying that the road to Auke Bay Recreational Area will not be plowed, sanded or de-iced this winter. The Forest Service is able to spend millions of dollars improving facilities for tourists at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center and goes to great length to accommodate tourists who wish to take flightseeing trips over the Juneau Icefield or who wish to raft the Mendenhall River. The agency needs to pay at least as much attention to accommodating the needs or desires of local residents as it pays to those out-of-town tourists. One way to do so is to come up with the comparatively paltry funding required to keep the Auke Rec road open for the hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents who use the area year-round.
