Lions Club to hold barbecue
On Saturday Nov. 16, the Mendenhall Flying Lions Club will be holding their seventh annual barbecue and auction at G.W. Teal in the Mendenhall Mall to benefit the Juneau Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Through the years, it has been able to raise over $25,000 for the Chapter.
Beginning at noon, the barbecue will feature Poe's Pork Palace smoked ribs with a salad and baked beans for $10 per plate donation. The Lions will serve until the food is gone.
At 6 p.m., the Lions Club will auction items donated by local businesses, distributors, and individuals. A listing of all items being auctioned will be available the day of the auction.

ANB, ANS officers elected
The 90th Annual Convention of the oldest Alaska Native organization in the state concluded its convention in Hoonah Alaska on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp adjourned their weeklong convention after debating a variety of social and political issues and electing new officers. The convention attended by more than 100 members was held in Hoonah from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2.
Newly elected officers for the ANB Grand Camp included Grand President Samuel Jackson from Kake, 1st Vice-president Ray Dennis from Haines, 2nd Vice-president Jack Lee from Hoonah, Grand Secretary Andy Ebona from Juneau, incumbent Grand Treasure Brad Fleutch from Juneau and Grand Sergeant at Arms Willard Jackson of Ketchikan.
Newly elected officers for the ANS Grand Camp included incumbent Grand President Deloresa Cadiente of Juneau, 1st Vice-president Cecelia Tavoliero of Anchorage, 2nd Vice-president Della Cheney of Kake, Grand Secretary Sonya Smith of Hoonah, Grand Treasure Adeline DeCastro of Klawock and incumbent Grand Sergeant at Arms Ellie Jackson of Kake.
JYFL selects raffle winners
Six football fans were winners in this season's Juneau Youth Football League fund-raising raffles.
The JYFL lower divisions raffle winners were drawn at the lower divisions awards ceremony on Oct. 27. T.J. Slagle won the grand prize: two tickets on Alaska Airlines and $500 cash. First prize - a Tracy Arm cruise for two, a season pass for the Mount Roberts Tramway and $250 cash - went to Steve Burns. Amy Breidinger won the second prize of $250 cash.
Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears raffle winners were drawn at the team's last football game on Sept. 27 at Adair-Kennedy Field. The grand prize - a cruise for two and $500 cash - went to Kelda Denton. Kim Peterson won first prize, a Taku Lodge flightseeing or wilderness experience and $250 cash. John Monagle won the second prize of $250 cash.
Food basket program scheduled
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is holding its annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Program. Families needing assistance this holiday must register in person at the main office located at 8617 Teal Street. Registration forms are available now through Friday, Nov. 15. Baskets will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, Nov. 26 and Wednesday, Nov. 27. The society also seeks volunteers to help assemble and distribute the baskets. Bazaar set at Douglas Community United Methodist Church
The "Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice Bazaar" will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Douglas Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 16. The church is at 1106 Third Street in Douglas on the corner of Third and E streets (across from the fire department). The bazaar will feature arts and crafts, baked goods including a selection of jellies, collectibles from stamps to jewelry, RADDA knives, UNICEF items, SERRV handicrafts made by third world artisans, attic treasures and grab-bag gifts. The Victorian tea-lunch room will be serving quiche, soup and specialty desserts.
