The Alaska Board of Game voted unanimously Sunday not to allow bear hunting around the Pack Creek Brown Bear Viewing Area.

The board voted down proposals 13 and 15, which would have allowed hunting on Swan Cove and Swan Island in the areas adjacent to the creek, a popular Admiralty Island tourist destination during the summer months.
A vocal opposition said it would be unfair to hunt bears that are accustomed to seeing humans.
Backers of the hunting proposals said the closures reflect the state's propensity for over-regulation. They said keeping hunters out of the area limits the chances to take trophy brown bears - males that many say are not frequent visitors at Pack Creek.
