I am always willing to admit when I make a mistake. I recently submitted an opinion piece accusing the University of Alaska Southeast of neglecting Veteran's Day. On the day the piece was published (Nov. 10), I was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call from the UAS Chancellor's Office.
They graciously informed me that there was an observance at the UAS Student Recreation Center in conjunction with the National Guard held on Veteran's Day. I also received an e-mail from the Chancellor's office, which was addressed to all employees and students of UAS on the same subject. Unfortunately, due to a prior commitment, I was unable to attend.
I applaud the university for doing its part to recognize all of our brave veterans, past and present. The only negative thing I would say is that for future observances more notice could be given and the events could be better published. A suggestion would be to have these type of events listed on the University's Web site event calendar, which I checked but did not see any mention of.
