Doe closure on Chichagof Island extended to Jan.

JUNEAU - The Federal Subsistence Board has closed doe hunting on federal lands on the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area portion of Unit 4 from Nov. 14 through Jan. 31, 2010. This extends the Sept. 14 through Nov. 13 closure implemented by the Hoonah and Sitka District Rangers.

The deer population within the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area remains low, following a series of deep-snow winters that resulted in substantial deer mortality. The closure will help preserve the reproductive potential of the herd, which should provide for a more rapid recovery of the population.

A map and description of the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area is located on page 34 and 35 of the Federal Subsistence Hunting Regulation booklet, available at Forest Service offices.

For additional information, contact U.S. Forest Service Hoonah District Ranger Rich Jennings at (907) 945-1201 or the Sitka District Ranger Carol Goularte at (907) 747-4218.
