FAIRBANKS - Fort Wainwright has welcomed a new commander for its Stryker Brigade.

A ceremony was held Tuesday for Col. Todd Wood as he took command of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry, from Col. Burt Thompson.

Thompson came to Fort Wainwright in 2006 after a lengthy and distinguished Army career. He recently oversaw the 12-month deployment of the 1-25th to Iraq's Diyala province, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

Maj. Gen. William Troy, the commander of U.S. Army Alaska, says the brigade had unprecedented success and destroyed a major al-Qaeda stronghold.
