Park Service wants ideas on backcountry use

Posted: Thursday, November 14, 2002

JUNEAU - The National Park Service will hold a meeting Tuesday in Juneau to gather ideas on how the backcountry should be managed in Glacier Bay National Park and two other parks.

The open house will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall.

The agency is developing plans to manage the backcountry - the areas without roads or major facilities - in Glacier Bay, Gates of the Arctic and Wrangell-St. Elias national parks.

The agency said the backcountry will be divided into zones for different types of activities such as hiking, skiing, camping and river-running; snowmachining; commercial services; airplane landings; and boating.
