ANCHORAGE - An Anchorage Superior Court judge sentenced a man to 43 years in prison with 10 suspended for a near-fatal beating of a woman.

Judge Patrick McKay found 41-year-old Earl Bates to be a dangerous "worst offender."

Police found Bates covered in blood and clutching a handful of hair from the victim on Feb. 26, 2007.

The victim spent 12 days in intensive care after suffering broken ribs and bleeding in her brain.

Prosecutors said McKay also restricted Bates' parole eligibility because of the seriousness of the crime and his extensive criminal history.

Prosecutors said Bates has six prior convictions for assault, including a prior felony assault in 1999.
