JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School teacher Craig Mapes received the Alaska Construction Academy's Instructor Excellence Award on Thursday.

Mapes received the award from the Alaska State Home Building Association for his work in the school district's Architecture, Construction and Engineering program.

He has been a high school trades teacher for more than 18 years, teaching classes in creative woods, basic construction, computer-assisted drafting, civil engineering and architecture, building design and development. He has also helped align JDHS with the University of Alaska Southeast, reinvigorate a house building project at JDHS, and provided leadership and guidance for the student chapter of the Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association.

"Craig advocates continuously for the Juneau Construction Academy program among his colleagues, district administrators and community partners, as he believes passionately and strongly that these courses and program provide meaningful and necessary educational opportunities for all students," said JDHS Principal Jim Kuhlmann in a district press release. "Without his energy and enthusiasm, these programs would not have been realized or have been as successful for our students."
