Safety achievement award
Capital City Fire Rescue is the recipient of the 2004 Life Safety Achievement Award from the Residential Fire Safety Institute. This award is given to fire departments that have not had a fire fatality in the year 2004. A total of 792 fire departments in the United States, Canada, Iceland, Italy and Greece have received this award.
Credit is given to our progressive and current building and fire codes, public fire education efforts, rapid response times and the citizens of Juneau.
In 2004 Alaska had 12 fire fatalities. For 2005, Alaska has had 17 fire fatalities.
Benefit dinner and auction
A benefit dinner and auction for Agnes Bellinger will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 18, at Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. Money raised will help with the costs of Agnes' cancer treatment.
Auction items include a Palm Springs vacation, Native foods, carvings and crafts. Donations to the event are being accepted.

Living Gift Market
Northern Light Church's "Living Gift Market" will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 20, at the church's fellowship hall.
The "Living Gift Market" will offer an opportunity to "purchase" animals like pigs, chickens and goats as an alternative to commercial gifts. The sponsored animals help hungry families around the world through Heifer International. Sponsors receive gift cards to note their purchases.

Coping with grief during holidays
"Coping with Loss During the Holidays," a program for families and friends who have lost a loved one, will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21, at the valley library.
Jamie McLean, a counselor in private practice, will give a presentation. The event is sponsored by AARP Widowed Persons and co-sponsored by the Alaskan Memorial Park and Mortuary.
