WASILLA - The Houston Police Department has been reduced from one to none.

Alaska State Troopers will take calls for now after the last officer in the Parks Highway community resigned as of Thursday.

Houston is a city of nearly 1,600 north of Wasilla.

Mayor Roger Purcell said the department should be back taking calls by the end of the year.

Purcell said the department has several applicants, including some with up to six years' experience.

Jason Holmgren was the last officer on the job. He left to work for the Wasilla Police Department.

He said benefits and a retirement considerations that could help his family were the main reason for leaving.
