Last month I visited our nation's capital. While there I sat in the gallery of the United States Senate. The only senator on the floor was the senior senator from the fine state of Alaska - Ted Stevens.
While I was watching the procedures of the Senate, a staff member approached Senator Stevens. Stevens started screaming at this staff member so loud that I could hear the words Stevens was saying from where I was sitting clear up in the gallery. Stevens used demeaning and belittling language towards the staffer.
I believe that people should be more courteous when addressing those that work for them. I especially believe this is true when you are an elected official and the staffer is really working for the people of the United States. Does Senator Stevens have no respect for those that work for him? Does he lack sufficient respect for the position of United States senator? Or does Stevens not respect the people of Alaska who put him in that position of trust? After seeing him that day on the floor of the Senate, I'd say Senator Stevens lacks respect. That is sad.
