10th annual Jingle Jog - The 10th annual Jingle Jog - a 5-kilometer run or 1-mile walk - will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. Check in at 9 a.m. at the parking lot of JRC/The Alaska Club's Mendenhall Valley location. Cost is $10 in advance or $12 day-of-race for adults, and $3 for kids. Pre-registration is available at JRC/The Alaska Club. Festive wear is encouraged. There will be fitness and health-related door prizes. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth indoor soccer registration - Sign-up began on Saturday, Nov. 8, and continues at the Parks and Rec main office at City Hall or the Zach Gordon Youth Center from Monday, Nov. 10, through Monday, Nov. 24. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Forms are available online at http://www.juneau.org/parkrec/youth/youthsports.php, or they can be picked up at the Parks and Rec office or Zach Gordon. Volunteer coaches and paid referees are needed. Juneau Volleyball Association Reverse Coed Volleyball - Registration is underway for the adult reverse coed volleyball league. In reverse coed volleyball, play is on a women's-height net, and men are considered "back-row players" and are only allowed to hit from behind the 10-foot line. The league will have two six-team divisions, with one game per week from Nov. 10 through Dec. 17. Info: Juneau Volleyball Association, 789-3052.
Women's Classic Basketball League skills clinic - Juneau Parks and Recreation will hold a skills clinic for Women's Classic Basketball League players on Monday, Nov. 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Gastineau Elementary School gymnasium. Info: Juneau Parks and Rec, 586-5226.
Juneau-Douglas High School dance team fund-raiser - The JDHS Dance Team is holding a garage sale on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School commons. 4-H karate fall classes - Juneau's 4-H Shotokan Karate-Do club has started its fall classes. Adults and kids from age 7 and up are invited to join the club, which meets from 6-6:45 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday nights and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturdays. Youth members pay $26.25 per month to join the club; additional family members can join at a reduced cost. Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Meet from 7-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Cost is $4 and open gym is limited to adults (age 18-older) only. Info: Community Schools, 463-1700, Ext. 325.
Open badminton gyms - Meet from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays at the Auke Bay Elementary School gym, or from 7- 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gastineau Elementary School gym in Douglas. Auke Bay gyms open to adults and teens; Gastineau gyms open to all ages. $3 fee per session. All abilities welcomed, bring a racquet if you own one. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
