Today is the official release date for former Gov. Sarah Palin's anticipated memoir, "Going Rogue," but some local booksellers weren't sure until the 11th hour if it would be available on time.
Local Fred Meyer's employees referred comment to corporate spokeswoman Melinda Merrill out of Portland, Ore., who initially said Monday evening that it was unclear if Juneau's store would have the books available by today's release date, then reported later Monday evening that the books were located at a Juneau dock.
"Found 'em. ... They'll get to the store overnight," she said. "That's the way it is in this business some times."
While some new books arrive well in advance of their release dates, hotly anticipated titles are often kept on tight delivery schedules to minimize the chance of early leaks, Merrill said.
"That means complications for Juneau," she said.
Local Costco marketing representative Juanito Senarillos initially said his store wouldn't have the books available until Friday, but later reported 690 copies on hand for today's release and 10 more on order.
Local Wal-Mart employees could not be reached for comment. An after-hours inquiry to the corporate office was not returned by press time.
Employees at Hearthside Books referred inquiries to owner Debbie Reifenstein, who could not be reached.
Meanwhile, the Juneau Public Library's online catalog listed one copy on order for the downtown branch and one copy on order for the Douglas branch.
