He worked behind the register there in his younger years and has now taken over as the new leader.
John Boone has become the new lease manager for the Valley Tesoro Alaska service and detailing station.
"I worked here before and actually thought it would be fun. I thought I needed another challenge," said Boone.
Boone said he came to take over through his work with Glacier Gas and Food, LLC, of which he is a managing member. He said he had done some contract work for Delta Western, which owns Valley Tesoro Alaska's building, and was asked if he would be interested in taking over management.
Now that he has, Boone has plans for the station. He has just introduced Kodiak Koffee there, and is now working on the building. He also intended to bring in more products and services.
"We try to do a little of everything to make it more of a convenience store than it was," Boone said.
One of the first steps is remodeling. Boone said the next priority is to redo the floor, cabinets and a new front counter. The back office was also rebuilt.
He said the car wash will be redone next summer.
Boone's other focus will be on buying products locally. He gave the coffee as one example, along with obtaining heating oil from Delta Western and Coca-Cola products from the Odom Corp. as examples.
"You're buying fuel from us, so I want to be able to support other local businesses," he said.
Another new aspect he introduced is house accounts for businesses that will offer fuel discounts.
Boone said that besides himself, Tesoro has six full-time employees.
Glacier Gas and Food also owns Valley Detail and the heating fuel tank behind the station. Boone also owns Southeast Services, which does oil and fuel recovery.
Boone originally worked at the station as a clerk in the mid-1980s. Back then it was still named Valley Chevron.
