Doing more than overeating this Thanksgiving
Most Americans are fortunate in that we are given a day off to give thanks. Many more get a second day just because it follows Thanksgiving Day. And if you throw in the weekend, that's four days just to say thanks!

This morning while you were eating breakfast, a young Coast Guardsman was fighting severe seasickness in the 15th hour of searching for a family boat off of Cape Hatteras in gale force conditions.

American electorate is deserving of an A+
The real story of the 2000 campaign and election will, in the end, be the resilience and patience of the American people. Voters had a hard time choosing in this election, and the results were so painfully close because people (collectively and individually) liked some qualities of both Al Gore and George W. Bush, and they disliked some characteristics of both men.

Disputed elections a tradition
Some political analysts claim that without quick resolution of the current presidential election, Americans will lose all faith in the electoral process.

Selective persecution
The following editorial appeared in today's Washington Post: Russian president Vladimir Putin would have the world believe that, in going after his country's independent media, his government is just enforcing the law. In the post-Communist rough and tumble, the argument goes, a handful of enterprising but shady operators got access to too much wealth. These "oligarchs," as they are known, have to be taught the lesson that they are not above the law. The media tycoons are simply oligarchs who happen to own newspapers and television networks.

Please speak up

The Alaska Fur Gallery's latest expansion in a potentially dangerous landslide zone is a scary reality for many. Please contact your mayor and assembly and ask them to stop this development.

Back to the farm
If a contingent of local residents declared that there should be no Thanksgiving Holiday this year because it runs counter to our Alaska traditions, would it be fair and reasonable for some federal agency and the City of Juneau to hire a turkey farmer to mediate the dispute?
