Winfree, 54, serves as executive director and general counsel for the Greater Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation, which owns Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
"In his life and legal career, Daniel Winfree has demonstrated an impressive intellect, a generous heart and a profound respect for the legal system and Constitution," Palin said in a written statement.
He is the first Fairbanks justice since Jay Rabinowitz, who retired 10 years ago when he reached the job's age limit, which is 70. Rabinowitz died in 2001.
Winfree is Palin's first appointment to the five-member court and is the 19th justice appointed.
