Alaska archivist begins sorting Stevens records

FAIRBANKS - The task of sorting through the records of the late Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska is getting under way at a warehouse in Fairbanks.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that archivist Mary Anne Hamblen is beginning her search through more than 4,700 boxes of documents gathered from Stevens' 40-year Senate career.

Stevens announced in March 2009 that he would house his collection at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Rasmuson Library, where Alaska's other senators also have their collections.

During the next two years or longer, the papers will be analyzed, cataloged and archived. The eventual goal is to incorporate many of them into a database that can be searched by the public.

The 86-year-old Stevens was killed last August in a floatplane crash in southwest Alaska.
