I do not know what the statistical probability of an aircraft-bird strike causing an accident at the Juneau Airport is but I support Steven Schlaffman's (even though I do not know him) idea for ROAD (Reduce Our Airport Dependency).
I would like all Juneau residents who have been neutral or negative on the "road out of Juneau" issue to reexamine their position in light of the events of Sept. 11. We were fortunate that the airport was only closed for a short period. Had it been closed for much longer we would have began to experience dramatic shortages in the commodities which we depend on and which come in daily by air. I don't even want to think about a medical emergency without an airport or a road link out of Juneau. Granted, in such a situation Whitehorse and the Whitehorse Airport might not be the most desirable alternative but at least it would be an alternative, which is more than we currently have if the our airport were closed.
Please Juneau, let us revisit the road question.
