Simple appeal

Posted: Wednesday, November 19, 2003

Paul Ginnetty's discussion of the popularity of Rush Limbaugh and similar entertainers to some Americans was enjoyable, although 1,500 or so words of explanation seemed unnecessary. The appeal of their simple-minded message is explained easily and briefly by the old saying, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

Obviously that doesn't apply to all, or even most, Americans. But the Republican motormouths illustrate very well that if one can pander effectively to the ignorance and bigotries of even 5 percent of Americans then riches (on which the Republicans will make sure they pay no taxes) and popularity will follow.
