I want to let you know how pleased I was when I read the article in this morning's paper that our teacher's union, JEA, is going back to the table with the district. We were all hopeful when so many new members were elected to the board that you would take this matter to heart and want a fair contract for the teachers. You have renewed my faith, for the time being.
As most of us spend countless hours this weekend and upcoming week preparing for conferences in elementary school, as the middle school and high school teachers did last weekend, we are encouraged that you realize the caliber and dedication of teachers here in Juneau.
After paying my bills this morning, I am reminded how my paycheck has lost spending power. I am reminded how much the cost of living has gone up and how little my pay has kept up. I love what I do, but am discouraged at the lack of monetary compensation that teachers get. I imagine fewer young people getting into the teaching profession due to the fact that it becomes more difficult to make ends meet on a teaching salary. This is a sad thought. We have one of the most important jobs in the world and also one of the most stressful, teaching our young people.
Lastly: The most frustrating thought, I believe, is that the administration's budget has not been affected by any cutbacks, while the students suffer from loss of teachers, higher class numbers, loss of programs, etc. When will the students be our number one priority?
