Alarmed by convictions

Posted: Friday, November 19, 2004

Is it just me, or are recent convictions of sexual abuse to a minor alarming? Constantly the newspapers report sex offenders registering for 10 years and very little jail time. Have you readers ever visited the sex offender Web site? There are over 80 living in Juneau.

So, because you confess to raping a 15-year-old girl, instead of being subject to an investigation, you are rewarded with minimal punishment? We might as well slap their wrists with a ruler and send them on their way. Just because an obviously guilty, perverted man confesses doesn't mean they know what they did was wrong; it's their lawyer's suggestion because a lesser sentence is available. It doesn't change the severity of the crime if one admits to their actions.

In high school we aren't given an easier detention if we confess to cheating on a test when caught red-handed. These criminals are back on the streets after 45 oh-so-horrible days in jail after repeatedly raping minors, prowling after their next victim. Thank you judge, for making me feel so safe. Oh, and I advise everyone to look through the sex offender registration site. The address is: http://www.dps.state.ak.us/nSorcr/asp/.
