Augusta K. 'Gussie' Byington

Sixty-year Juneau resident Augusta K. "Gussie" Byington, 102, died Nov. 13, 2004, in Autumn House in Montesano, Wash.

She was born on Oct. 23, 1902, in Saint Hedwig, Texas, to Henry and Mary (Palica) Kosub. She married William W. Byington in Juneau on April 24, 1933. He died in June of 1993. She then went to live with her brother-in-law and his family in Raymond, Wash.

She was the founding member of the Alaska Pioneer Association. She loved to fish and enjoyed doing crafts. She had a spectacular garden. Family said, "Tour buses in Juneau would often pass her home so visitors could see her garden."

She is survived by her brother-in-law and his wife, Wayne and Louise Byington of Raymond, Wash.; nephews, Philip and William B. Byington, both of Anchorage; nephew, Duane Byington of Raymond, Wash.; niece, Gwenlynn Byington of Anchorage; sister-in-law, Gladys Byington of Anchorage; and brother, Elmer Kosub of San Antonio, Texas.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
