ANCHORAGE - A teacher at a private Southcentral Christian school was arrested and charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
Brion Williams, 28, who was athletic director at the Heritage Christian School in south Anchorage, was being held Tuesday in the Anchorage Jail.
Williams was fired Monday after he acknowledged having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student, said Lynn Stowe, the school's chief administrator.
The contact apparently started last summer and ended in September, she said. It's illegal in Alaska for a teacher or anyone in an authority position to have sex with someone under 18.
"We're praying for him, as well as for the student who was involved," Stowe said. "We're a Christian school, and we have high moral standards for our students and especially for our faculty. It was a tremendous shock to us."
Williams attended Muldoon Christian School, where he played basketball, and later attended Bartlett High School where he played football. He graduated in 1992.
He had worked at Heritage for three years, teaching physical education to the secondary grades and coaching girls basketball.
Two students told school staff members about the alleged relationship because they were worried about their friend, Stowe said.
"We reported it to the authorities," he said. "They told us not to do anything until they investigated."
