Trashed trailheads

Posted: Sunday, November 20, 2005

Over the years I have tried to pick up litter at the numerous trailheads around Juneau. The Windfall Lake trailhead was a disaster; so I ventured out to clean it up, and it turned out to be a major undertaking. It would have been more than could be carried on an S-10 pickup; so the solution was to burn the dimension wood such as 2-by-4s and 1-inch lumber. After burning the wood the charge at the landfill was for 580 pounds. If the cost of cleaning up were factored in, such as $10 for gasoline, the $23.81 landfill charge, $20-an-hour labor charge for four hours, it was an expensive undertaking.

Being an 84-year-old retiree, my labor is cheap, but it is very upsetting to have people with such little understanding make such as mess as this.

By the way, any load of trash going past Auke Bay is heading in the wrong direction.
