Kathy Young

Posted: Thursday, November 20, 2008

Former Juneau resident Kathy (Spanabel) Young died Nov. 7, 2008, of complications following heart surgery. She was 56.

Born the youngest of six daughters in Salem, Ohio, she grew up in nearby Columbiana, graduating from Columbiana High School in 1970. By the time she was born, many of her sisters were grown and married.

Her parents took her on many vacation road trips around the United States. In 1965, they visited the Black Hills, the place that would become her home so many years later.

Her family said she was definitely a "Daddy's girl." Her father taught her to shoot at a young age, and as a teenager, she won many awards in marksmanship. Her high school nickname was "Annie Oakley."

She married Greg Young in 1973 and in 1976 moved to southern Illinois, where their daughter, Erica, was born. In 1977, they followed one of their life dreams and moved to Juneau, where they lived for 12 years.

Daughters, Lindsay and Jessie, were born in Juneau. After a three-year interlude in California, the family moved to Spearfish, S.D.

Her life centered on her family. She was a loving wife and a kind and devoted mother, her family said. Her daughters never heard her complain once about Dad's many hunting trips.

"She always had a willing ear and held that rare gift to give advice only when asked," her family said. "Kathy was always quietly taking care of things and never seeking the spotlight. Her good natured, steady presence will be sadly missed, especially by her grandchildren, who will know her only in absence."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Wilbur Spanabel, of Columbiana, Ohio; and sister, Gail Loveland.

She is survived by her husband, Greg Young; daughters, Lindsay Bouman and husband, Tate, and their children, Maria and Adelyn, and, Jessie Young, all of Spearfish, and Erica Beffert and husband, David, and their daughter, Sophia, of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Jimmi, Carol, Donna and Bobbi, all of Ohio; nephew, Dennis Powers, of Juneau; parents-in-law, Dale and Nancy Young, of Spearfish; Spearfish in-laws, Mark and Traci Young and their children, Jeff, Jake and Hannah, and Todd Young and his children, Clark, Amy and Jack; Juneau in-laws, Dale and Donna Young and children, Stephanie, Dale, Shane, and Laura, and Anne and Lynn Bennett and children, Heather, Holly and Rhett; and many nieces, nephews and extended family throughout the country.

A memorial service was held Nov. 13 at the Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Relay for Life or other cancer-related charities. Condolences may be left at www.aldingerfuneralhome.com.
