Volunteer grooming begins at Eaglecrest, the glacier

Posted: Friday, November 20, 2009

The Juneau Nordic Ski Club will now be periodically grooming both the Lower Loop trails at the Eaglecrest Ski Area and at the Mendenhall Lake Campground.

Jack Kreinheder with the JNSC, groomed a classic track this week on the Lower Loop trails at Eaglecrest and said he plans to regroom Thursday morning.

The weather forecast called for up to 2 inches of snow last night, he said, "(But) it should still be good classic skiing if it doesn't snow more than 2 or 3 inches."

Kreinheder said he plans to groom the loop again by 10 a.m. Saturday.

Jeffra Clough, director of sales and marketing at Eaglecrest said many users are already taking advantage of the groomed trails.

Additionally, the Mendenhall Lake Campground was groomed for skate skiing Wednesday. Kreinheder said there was not enough snow yet to set a classic track.

Frequency of grooming will be based on volunteer availability, weather and snow conditions.

Members of the JNSC are asking users to refrain from walking or snowshoeing on the tracks as it quickly damages their integrity. Dogs are also discouraged.

The downstairs level of the lodge at Eaglecrest is open Thursday through Monday. The second floor and food service is still closed and will be until the area officially opens.
