JUNEAU - Early season snowfall allowed managers of Eaglecrest Ski Area to move the projected opening date to Saturday, Nov. 28, up from Dec. 5.
"Mother Nature has been very kind to us and the mountain is looking very good," General Manager Kirk Duncan said in a statement. "We still have many things to do before we open, but if the weather holds, I feel that opening a week earlier than planned is a very good possibility."
Only the Ptarmigan chairlift, serving moderate and advanced terrain, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday of opening weekend.
The new Black Bear chairlift passed its load test on Wednesday and will open before the Christmas holidays, management said.
Duncan said snow still needs to be packed with snow cats, and chairlift tower pads and rope lines need to be installed before the area can open.
An employee orientation is scheduled for this Saturday to get employees ready for the season.
