Coffeehouse event starts Friday at Northern Light

Northern Light United Church will host a weekly coffeehouse event with music, poetry and other entertainment, beginning Friday.

The coffeehouse will run from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. every Friday in the church at 400 11th Street. There is no cover charge and the event is not evangelical or religiously oriented. Greg Boettner will be the host and emcee.

"We just wanted to create a space where people could hang out and have coffee and socialize without having to hang out in a bar," Boettner said.

Boettner and his wife, Amelia Lorenz, came to Juneau a few months ago to work at the church through a national volunteer program.

Boettner said he hopes to book each Friday's entertainment in advance and include a range of performers. He said no one has committed to this first Friday and he expects this first event to be an open mike for walk-in performers.

He encourages interested performers age 18 and older to call and sign up in advance. For more information call the church at 586-3131.
