Neighbors Letter

Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2001

Despite the stiff winds, the work crew for FRIENDS OF THE FLAGS was able to take down the 50 states flag display on Egan Drive downtown this past Sept. 29. This ends the 24th continuous season that the flags have flown over the Capital City of Alaska. I would like to publicly thank one of my co-chairman, Jim Akins and his crewmembers, Jim Carroll, Michael Orlove, Nancy Zimmerman and Richard Frazer for a great job.

For those of you who are new to Juneau and may have wondered how this project is funded, it is supported solely by donations from members of this community. We also enjoy the support of civic-minded businesses like KINY/KSUP radio stations, which have generously donated the air time and voice of Kelly Peres who makes Public Service Announcements that promote our annual fundraisers, (Kelly is my other co-chairman). Tyler Rentals' Juneau manager Steve Kikendall, has been another major contributor by supplying the very specialized machine, (40 foot man lift), to put up and take down the flags. Pete Bernstein of Alaska Ship Chandlers has supplied the flag sets at a reduced price for many years. Rich Deakins, of Hesson & Deakins Accounting Service, has lent his expertise to our bookkeeping needs.

And thank all of you who graciously contributed the funds to keep the flag project alive and well in Juneau. I know many of you enjoy their presence every summer season by the notes and cards I receive along with your donations. We have the money in the bank to order the next season flags and will do so by the end of the year.

And this is for anyone who may be concerned that we flew the old designed flag for the state of Georgia this past season, we have been told by the flag manufacture that the new design has officially been made available to them, so we will be able to have the new design in 2002.

For further information or if you would like to volunteer to help the install crew, or make a donation, you can reach us by writing P.O. Box 32201, Juneau, AK, 99803; or e-mail
