Juneau takes team title at Kayhi

Posted: Thursday, November 21, 2002

Juneau wrestled the team title away from Kotzebue at last weekend's All Schools Wrestling Tournament in Ketchikan.

The Crimson Bears finished with a 4-0 team record in the tournament, held Friday and Saturday.

"We started out a little slow, and got better as it went on," Juneau coach Bob Mahon said.

Kotzebue, the top Class 3A team in the state, finished second with a 3-1 record. Wrangell was third.

Also wrestling in the meet were teams or combined squads representing Petersburg, Mount Edgecumbe, Hydaburg, Metlakatla, Thorne Bay and the Sitka junior varsity.

Juneau did lose to Ketchikan in a non-tournament contest on Saturday. Mahon said that match included several of Juneau's junior varsity wrestlers, who received valuable experience on the mats.

"We hung in there pretty good with our JV kids," Mahon said.

Individual leaders for Juneau were sophomore Jake Ritter (6-0 individual record) and senior Robert Vicario (5-0), who were named the Crimson Bears' outstanding wrestlers of the week.

Also posting winning individual records at the Ketchikan meet were David Liliedahl (4-1), Isaac Cadiente (5-1), John Kuterbach (3-2), Austen Clair (4-2), Cody Wolf (5-1), Sungie Musarra (4-1), Dennis Hall (5-1) and Matt Majoros (1-0).

"We did really well," Musarra said his team's effort at the meet. "We didn't do too well against Ketchikan, but we came back and did really well against Kotzebue."
