I, for one, applaud the CBJ for providing benefits to domestic partners. Those that oppose the decision should know that the state governments of California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington already provide such benefits. Also, more than 160 municipal governments from virtually every state in the union currently offer domestic partner benefits.
I encourage those that oppose such coverage to check out the list of governments and corporations that offer domestic partner benefits at www.hrc.org. But don't surf the Web with your Dell, Gateway or HP computer with an Intel processor using any Microsoft product - all five of these companies offer domestic partner benefits. Beware also that you should not drive a GM or Ford car; never use Chevron or Texaco gasoline; never fly a Boeing airplane on Alaska, Delta, United or American Airlines; don't watch any Disney movie, ABC program or tune in to ESPN; stop drinking Pepsi or Coke; avoid using a Xerox machine. Above all, don't shave with any product from Gillette before riding your Harley Davidson to Nordstrom to buy Nike shoes or apparel. All of these companies provide benefits to domestic partners.
Simply put, providing coverage to domestic partners is good business and the right thing to do. Why else would more than 5,000 American companies already do it? Providing benefits to domestic partners rewards valued employees which helps maintain a stable, well-trained workforce.
To those that have such harsh opposition to the CBJ and every other government and company mentioned above that offer domestic partner benefits, I say fear not! You might still have time to move to a society that is more in line with your beliefs, although it would have to be a closed society that does not do business with any company from the Western world. Are there countries like that left in the world, or has our government bombed all of them?
