Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School students take field trip to Admiralty

Posted: Friday, November 22, 2002

More than 120 seventh- and eighth-graders from Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School's Spruce House classrooms took a field trip to Admiralty Island on Nov. 1.

Greens Creek sponsored the trip aboard the Four Seasons Marine boat the Admiralty Wind. Spruce House teachers used to outing to teach natural history, place names and local geography. Students looked at a beaver dam, a beach and other areas on the east side of the island by Young Bay.

The field trip also was an opportunity to build a sense of community among class members, said science teacher Robert Jones.

Greens Creek helped coordinate guest speakers from the U.S. Forest Service as well as the Juneau Audubon Society. Eight parents, staff and crew from the different organizations helped with the trip, as did teachers Jones, Matt LeGassick, Chohla Dick and Didi Ryall.

The Greens Creek Mine is a joint venture between Kennecott Minerals and Hecla Mining Co. A road connects the landing point, where the students explored Admiralty, and mine itself.
