Consortium posters win international design award

SITKA - A series of four posters created for the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium WISEWOMAN Women's Health Program recently won top honors in the Poster Series category of the 2009 MarCom Creative Awards.

The poster series was designed to promote women's heart health. The messages range from heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women to heart disease is different for women than it is for men. All four posters promote heart screening for women, which the SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women's Health Program offers throughout Southeast Alaska and is free to women who qualify.

"The poster series is compelling and brings home the often forgotten message that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death for women," said Martha Pearson, SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women's Health Program Coordinator.

The MarCom Creative Awards is an international competition overseen by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). It attracts more than 5,000 entries a year from most of the top marketing and communication firms in the world, ranging from small one-person shops and student organizations all the way to the largest multinational corporations.

There are three levels of awards. Platinum is the top honor, followed by Gold and then Honorable Mention. About 15 percent of the entrants win a Platinum award and about 15 percent win a Gold award. Some of the other 2009 Platinum winners were for projects promoting Toyota, Wells Fargo, IBM, UPS, Merrill Lynch, Hewlett-Packard, several universities and similar organizations. SEARHC also received a Platinum MarCom Creative Award in 2006 for a series of three behavioral health posters.

"Our department has continually been raising the bar every year in regard to the messages we put out there for the health education and awareness of the people we serve," said Michael Jenkins, SEARHC Corporate Communications Director. "It's an honor, and humbling at the same time, when you're recognized for it."
