Gardening class offered
Do you have a gardening question? Call a Master Gardener. Better yet, become a Master Gardener. This year's Master Gardener class will start Monday, Nov. 26 at the Floyd Dryden School and run for three weeks. The class is limited to the first 25 gardeners to sign up. It will be taught every Monday and Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m., and every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The class ends Dec. 15. Students must attend at least 33 hours of the class in order to graduate.
To become a Master Gardener, a gardener must have gardened at least two years in Southeast Alaska. The class covers botany, soils, composting, fruits and berries, lawns, pesticides, landscaping, pruning, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, greenhouses, houseplants, insects and diseases.
The class is taught by District Extension agent Jim Douglas and a number of Master Gardeners from previous classes. This year the Master Gardener class will cost $60. The increase in cost covers the Alaska Gardeners Manual and a complete set of lecture notes. Gardeners who take the class will have a 40 hour obligation to donate time back to the community. Some Master Gardeners will teach in schools, help with gardening classes, work with neighborhood gardens, help with the new community garden in the Auke Rec area, and all will be donating at least 10 hours of time to help with the Alaska Gardening Conference to be held in Juneau May 3 and 4, 2002. To enroll in the program call Alaska Cooperative Extension Service at 465-8749.
