...for all your efforts

JDHS hosted another successful Academic Decathlon Southeast Regional Tournament this weekend. I am extremely grateful to the families who housed students from Klawok, Metlakatla, Haines, Ketchikan, and Craig: the families Dore, Hein, Hemenway, Walsh, Miller, Glass, Meyer, Steininger,Vinson, Morgan, Bauer, Untalasco, Gissel, Froelich, Taylor and Chapman.

And, to the generous community members who spent Saturday morning judging the speech and interview events, we could not have accomplished this tournament without your help. These volunteers included: Matt Fishel, Pam Keane, Vicky & Paul Kraft, Dirk Miller, Jeanie Foy, The Meyer family (Debbie, Lee, Molly, & Amber), Barbara Walker, Katherine Milliron, Eric Bauer, Chris Kimrey, Kim Elton, Cecelia Miller, Don Ashe, Debbie Hemway, and Russel Kunibe. Thanks, also, to the students: Lindsey Forrest, Kelsey Hogins, Lydia Ver, Alex Grundman, and Angelica Lim for keeping track of valuable time. Carol May served as the official tournament director for the second year in a row. Thanks to her organization and efficient management the tournament went exactly as scheduled. Thanks to Margot Knuth who spent a good amount of her weekend grading all 57 essays. Believe me, I know how time consuming this was. This event requires community effort to be successful. I appreciate all of you who take the time to support events that provide additional academic challenges to our students and who foster an environment that promotes academic success.

...for your hard work

We had a fire at 9407 Long Run Drive around midnight of Oct. 30. We suffered some loss, but due to quick response and hard long work by firemen, our losses were held to a minimum. The fire began in the garage and our friend Don Drew spotted the blaze and got us out of the house. Don notified our next-door neighbors, the Temples, who called the police and fire departments. When the fire department arrived, the firemen contained the fire and prevented its spreading to our living quarters and to the neighbors' houses. They put out the fire. The firemen entered the house; moved contents out of damaged areas, covered furniture with tarps and even removed pictures hanging on the walls. They did an outstanding job! I commend them highly. While the firemen were fighting the fire, many neighbors offered their assistance and a place to stay. I thank God for this happening in Juneau. Juneauites are great neighbors and friends. We thank everyone.
