Bike rack for JDHS

Posted: Friday, November 23, 2001

I have a friend named Daniel Glass. He likes to ride his bike, and he actually wears a helmet. He goes to school on his bike, especially on Bike to Work Day. Back when I went to good old JDHS, I asked him if there was one thing he could change about this school, what would it be? He told me the school needs an adequate bike rack. They have to use unsheltered metal racks at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool next to the high school.

I went to the student council about that year two years ago. Nothing happened. The following year I was working for the CHOICE program at the high school, and suggested the CHOICE students should make a bike rack for a project. They opted for a park bench instead.

Two years later this idea is still burning with me. I want this bike rack for Juneau-Douglas High School. I want the students to be encouraged to bike to school, and not worry about theft. I hope to see more students walking to school, and biking, and enjoying the great life and liveliness outside Juneau has to offer, no matter what the weather or amount of daylight is like. I hope to see people enjoying the pleasures of being grounded and feeling safe, and keeping healthy. Putting your body into motion does that.

I also want to feel the goofy excitement of feeling like I'm changing the world, or at least my corner of it. So, members of the Juneau School Board, I ask that you provide adequate bike rack space for the Juneau-Douglas High School students.
