ANCHORAGE - Naming an interim mayor in Anchorage when U.S. Sen.-elect Mark Begich resigns in early January is creating quite a stir among city Assembly members.
The city charter specifies the job falls to whoever is the Assembly chair at the time the mayor steps down.
Problem is, the chairman, Matt Claman and vice-chair Sheila Selkregg have opposing recollections of events leading to their leadership positions.
At a work session Friday, Selkregg said that both she and Claman had agreed in a private meeting with four newly elected members in April to step down from their leadership jobs if they decided to run for mayor.
Selkregg is a candidate and said she is ready to step down immediately. Claman said he is considering running but hasn't made up his mind and doesn't want to give up the chairmanship.
