Awards, graduations, military enlistments and competitions

Eliza J. Squibb of Juneau is participating in the Bates College Junior Semester Abroad program. Squibb, a women's study major, is studying with the Antioch Education Abroad program in Europe. Bates College is located in Lewiston, Maine.

Donald Hammond, a retired chiropractor who practiced in Juneau for 34 years and now lives in Anchorage, has been named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year by Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) in Portland, Ore.

Summer Amanda Koester of Juneau earned her bachelor of arts degree and Sara Marion Eliason of Juneau earned her bachelor of arts in education degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.

Billie-June Tonsgard won four silver medals for her performance in ballet, tap, jazz and lyrical dance at the World Championships for the Performance Arts in Los Angeles.

 

Bryan S. Perez, the son of Peter D. Perez of Juneau, has graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.

Army Pvt. William D. Arnold has graduated from the unit supply specialist course at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Elizabeth Smith of Juneau has been named to the dean's list at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in recognition of outstanding academic achievements during the summer 2000 semester.

Jeff Shipman of Juneau was part of a three-man team that finished first in a regional computer programming contest in Las Cruces, N.M. He is a junior majoring in computer science at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, N.M.

Sarah Hanson, a 1992 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School and a local singer and songwriter, is on tour in New Zealand with the "Uncle Monkey" music group. She met the group while they stopped in Juneau as part of their 1999 world tour.

Michael Wilmot of Juneau recently completed his flight training at Hillsboro Aviation School in Oregon. He received certificates as a private airplane pilot, and a commercial pilot and instructor of helicopters.
