I know that Ms. Renshaw is just worried about her children, but her notions that a road would be the downfall of safety in Juneau is just silly. I don't have any figures of what the crime rate is in Whitehorse, but you would think that we would have heard a thing or two about the wickedness of our neighbors to the north. Speaking of which, you don't hear much about anything to do with Whitehorse. I don't think I've even heard of it being mentioned on the same list of most expensive towns in America to live in. Hmmm. Everything in Juneau has been more expensive then even Anchorage for the entire 17 years I have lived here. Pay another $125 million for another mainline ferry?
I may be wrong, but didn't we just pay for a mainline ferry in the Kennicott? And has anyone heard the AMH say anything but "we will need to replace all of the mainline ships within the next 20 years." Maybe I missed the article where they changed their mind. Here is an idea for you all to chew on: Give Sitka their fast ferry back, move the AMH to Ketchikan, and build a road for Juneau, Petersburg, Wrangell, Haines and Skagway. I will always love Juneau, but I don't have to love my food or gasoline bill. And when there is no snow in Juneau, there usually is in Haines or Whitehorse.
