ANCHORAGE - The Anchorage School Board says it is working hard to combat the dropout rate in city schools.
But city officials want to know why the board's efforts are failing.
Members found themselves on the defensive Friday trying to answer that question in a special meeting with city assembly members.
Assembly members say there's a need for change after the release of the latest numbers on the statewide dropout epidemic.
Both sides agree that even though Anchorage schools generally graduate more students than elsewhere in Alaska, the numbers are still not acceptable.
About 4 percent public school students in Anchorage drop out.
