JUNEAU - Gov. Sean Parnell has appointed Juneau's Phyllis Carlson to the state's Suicide Prevention Council and re-appointed Bill Martin to the council.
The 15-member council is responsible for developing and implementing a statewide suicide prevention plan and reporting to the Legislature on its findings and recommendations.
The council works to improve public awareness of suicide and enhance suicide prevention services.
Carlson, who began work Monday as director of rural education for the Department of Education and Early Development was recently elected to her third term on the Juneau School Board.
She has been a member of the national Johnson-O'Malley Association, the United Way of Southeast Alaska board, the Juneau Alliance for Mental Health Inc., the Consortium for Alaska Native Higher Education and the Juneau Youth Services Board.
Carlson had been the education director for the Tlingit-Haida Central Council since 1992.
Re-appointed to the board was Bill Martin of Juneau, president of the Tlingit-Haida Central Council since 2007. Martin has served on the council since 2004, and previously served as its chair. Martin represents the Alaska Federation of Natives on the council.
