ANCHORAGE - A state health report shows Alaska ranks among the top 10 in the nation in the rates of two sexually transmitted diseases: gonorrhea and chlamydia.
The report Tuesday said 1,006 cases of gonorrhea were reported statewide last year. That's up 70 percent over the year before and ranks ninth nationally with a rate of 144 cases per 100,000 people.
The report said 5,200 cases of chlamydia were reported last year, up 8 percent and second in the nation.
KTUU reports one reason the numbers are up is new testing technology. Previously, bacteria in samples from remote areas did not survive long enough during transportation to be discovered.
